As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Fiji’s shipbuilding industry, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has officially received the feasibility study report on its revitalisation plans.

The report, compiled by Arup Australia in partnership with the Australian High Commission and the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific, finds that there is strong demand for ship repair and maintenance in Fiji and the Pacific region, with existing shipyard facilities operating at near full capacity.

While handing the report to the Prime Minister at the site of the new shipyard at the Lautoka Port, Australian High Commissioner to Fiji Ewen McDonald says there is a clear opportunity for Fiji to strengthen its position as a regional hub for ship maintenance and vessel construction.

He says the report also highlights the need for an expanded technical workforce, including ship builders, welders, marine engineers, and technicians.

McDonald says by investing in vocational training and partnerships with local institutions, they can ensure that Fijians are equipped with the skills needed to take up these roles.

He says Australia is committed to working with the Government of Fiji to support these endeavours.

The High Commissioner adds stage two of the project will focus on finalising the design, developing a business case, and laying the groundwork for the project's implementation which includes some early works on site, such as survey works and environmental assessments to accelerate the progress

Rabuka says the study will lay the groundwork for the establishment of a world-class shipbuilding facility that will position Fiji as a hub for maritime engineering, ship construction, and repair services in the Pacific region.

He says the newly-built facility will be managed by Oceania Shipbuilding and Engineering Pte Limited – a government company formed to oversee its operations and ensure the success of this venture.

Rabuka stresses they remain committed to fostering partnerships that will strengthen technical capacity and ensure that Fiji’s shipbuilding industry is not just competitive regionally – but also globally.

He adds this important venture will not only open up career pathways and employment, but it will also drive the development of a newly skilled workforce.
