Fiji relies 88 percent on the usage of fossil fuels and the launch of the Fiji National Energy Policy intends to reduce dependency on imported fuels.

While launching the policy, Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Vatimi Rayalu highlighted that the objective of the Fiji National Energy Policy is to reduce exposure to oil price fluctuations in Fiji.

Rayalu says the policy was approved last year in March by the cabinet, as the government recognises that energy is a critical factor in maintaining smooth operations of the economy.

He says the Department of Energy aims to reach 100 percent renewable energy by 2036 which will cost about $3.9 billion while $2.4 billion will be required to ensure all vehicles are electric.

He further says that NEP will support renewable energy, which will safeguard Fiji's economy.

Rayalu adds that the Global Green Growth Institute has provided financial and technical support for the policy.

The Director for Energy, Mikaele Belena says it is a very critical document that will pave the way forward in terms of the energy sector particularly looking at the target of having a just and inclusive energy transition.

The Director says currently Fiji uses 55 percent of renewable energy and through funding support, they will be able to get close to achieving the target of 100 percent.

He says they are committed to ensuring that all Fijians have access to affordable, reliable, safe and clean energy by prioritising the use of resources.
