Compared to the number of laboratory-confirmed dengue cases for the past 10-weeks, Fiji is well below the dengue outbreak threshold.

This was stated by the Divisional Medical Officer Central, Tevita Qica while responding to concerns raised about the rising number of mosquitoes in the Nasinu area and people are worried that it may become a dengue fever outbreak in the country.

Qica says the Ministry of Health is monitoring the trend of dengue fever cases in Fiji and will respond to the issues accordingly.

He says Fiji is in the rainy season, and it is anticipated that if we lose our guard, there will be an increase in mosquitoes population with increased breeding sites.

He adds the Ministry of Health Divisional Outbreak Response team have scheduled mosquito source reduction activities in the community with the respective town councils and local authorities on a routine basis.

Qica says their teams are pre-positioned across the board from community engagement in terms of creating awareness, source reduction, supply chain and increased surveillance as far as the dengue outbreak is concerned.
