Fiji is fortunate to have had Prof. Brij Lal show us the way in democracy and human rights – TISI Sangam

TISI Sangam National President, Sadasivan Naicker says Fiji is fortunate to have had Professor Brij Lal walk with us and show us the way in democracy and human rights.

Professor Lal passed away on Saturday in Brisbane, Australia.

He was a renowned historian, author, and a passionate pro-democracy activist.

Professor Lal and his wife, Padma Lal were expelled from Fiji in 2009.

He was born in Tabia, Labasa and received his university education in Canada and Australia.

He was 69 years old.

Professor Lal will be laid to rest tomorrow at the Great Northern Garden of Remembrance in Queensland.

Naicker says they are deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of Professor Lal.

He has conveyed their our deepest condolences to Professor Brij Lal’s bereaved family and friends.

Naicker adds Professor Lal’s remarkable achievements in academia and his contributions to nation building in Fiji will endure forever.

Meanwhile, the National Federation Party will hold a condolence gathering in memory of Professor Lal from 10am to 3pm at Jai Narayan College Hall in Suva tomorrow.

Speakers at the condolence gathering will be former Prime Minister and People's Alliance Leader Sitiveni Rabuka, NFP Leader Professor Biman Prasad, Krishna Datt who taught Professor Lal in the then Labasa Secondary School, Prominent lawyer Richard Naidu and Professor Vijay Naidu.

FRIEND Fiji, Fiji Institute of Applied Studies and Global Girmit Institute will also hold a condolence gathering at the Lautoka Girmit Centre from 12pm to 3pm tomorrow.

The Funeral Service will be live-streamed from Brisbane, Australia at both venues from 1pm-3pm on Thursday.
