To support road safety and the rising concerns about drug-impaired driving, the coalition government is introducing a new mandate that requires all drivers who are applying for a Public Service Vehicle license or a regular driving license to undergo mandatory drug testing.

Minister for Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau made this statement and said this initiative is a crucial step in minimising road accidents and prevent drivers from using drugs.

Tuisawau also emphasised that the Land Transport Authority will be at the forefront of implementing these drug tests, which will become a requirement for anyone seeking to obtain or renew a driving license.

He says they are committed to ensuring the safety of our roads and our communities because drug-impaired driving is a serious threat, and the coalition government believes that mandatory drug testing is a necessary measure to address this issue.

He adds that this new policy is part of a comprehensive approach to road safety, which includes strict enforcement of traffic laws and increased public awareness campaigns about the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs.

The Minister says their goal is to create a culture of safety on our roads where drivers are fully aware of the consequences of their actions.

Ro Filipe says they cannot do this alone and will need the support of every driver, every passenger, and every community member to ensure that our roads remain safe.

He says by working together, the government believes this new policy will significantly reduce the number of accidents caused by drivers under the influence and ultimately save lives.
