Permanent Secretary for Education Selina Kuruleca says throughout our history, Fiji has encountered its share of challenges and trials of progress and development and we have paid highly and dearly for some decisions and actions that were taken in the past however, we have gotten through it all and persevered.

While speaking at the 53rd Fiji Day celebration at the Suva Grammar School today, Kuruleca says it is important and timely that we fully acknowledge this day as Fiji is a nation where rich and diverse cultures, religions and people of many races can live together.

She says this is the Fiji we celebrate today, a Fiji that is our identity and our history.

She says we have made bold decisions that have propelled our nation forward and we stand resolute in our commitment to self-determination.

The Permanent Secretary says as we celebrate the 53rd anniversary of our independence, we must look back with gratitude for the path we have travelled and the strength we have gained, draw inspiration from the resilience of our people, the unity in diversity and the vision of a brighter future.

She says Fiji's journey continues and together, we will write the next chapter in our history filled with progress, prosperity and a brighter future for all.

The Grammar alumni also says education is the cornerstone and the key to unlocking many opportunities as it is through education that we empower ourselves to face the challenges of the world and contribute meaningfully to our society.

Grammar Assistant Principal Emosi Kuli says this year's celebration has been very special for the school as they launched the Scholastic Crimestoppers Program as well while this is also the first year of doing a cadet pass out parade.

He says there is a lot of excitement for the celebrations as the Fiji Water Flying Fijians have also qualified for the quarter-final of the Rugby World Cup and adds they are behind the team with the belief that the boys will do its very best.

The school celebrated Fiji Day with a mixture of different cultural items while school cadets also raised the Fijian flag.

The celebration started with students traditionally welcoming Kuruleca.
