President, Jioji Konrote commended the United Nations for its tremendous contributions to Fiji during UN’s 75th anniversary commemoration.

Konrote says the United Nations has stood with Fiji and the whole of our region each time we faced a major disaster, each time we faced a health crisis and each time we faced a new challenge to our development.

He says in return, Fijians have given back a great deal to this institution as for more than 40 years, our peacekeepers have defended the defenceless in some of the world’s most conflict-ridden regions.

Konrote says for all of our independent years, the United Nations has touched all aspects of our lives, from the vaccinations the children received in primary schools, supporting for strengthening the democratic institutions, enhancing food security, programmes that expand incomes and livelihoods for women, helping us develop our data capabilities to improve Government policy making, supporting victims of domestic violence and abuse and to giving voice to Fiji’s young to shape international discussions on the big questions of our time.

Konrote says they look to the UN to give Fiji the global solidarity it needs as the economic wounds this pandemic has inflicted on the Pacific may never heal.

UN Resident Coordinator, Sanaka Samarasinha has reaffirmed UN’s commitment to advance sustainable development and building resilient nations through enhanced partnerships and dialogue.
