Fiji Corrections Service and the Judiciary in talks to convene court hearings through Skype conferencing

The Fiji Corrections Service and the Judiciary are in discussions to convene court hearings through Skype which will not require inmates or remandees to be taken to the court house for their cases.

This comes after the Fiji Corrections Service has installed Skype Conferencing equipment at all Corrections Centers to enable prisoners to contact their loved ones and legal representatives.

Commissioner of Corrections, Commander Francis Kean says this initiative will allow those under their care to be able to contact family members and also seek legal counsel without the need to travel.

He says this is part of the measures put in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kean says family members of inmates or remand prisoners and the legal fraternity can contact the Officers in Charge of the respective Correctional Centers to enquire on what days and times they operate this Skype system.

He says this was made possible through donations by the International Committee of the Red Cross, United Nations Development Fund and the Fijian government.
