Shawnal Kumar, Sarojni Devi and Ritesh Prasad.

A woman of Tamavua who lost her job due to the COVID-19 pandemic in April this year says instead of buying fireworks, she will spend money to prepare sweets and food and distribute it to the underprivileged.

Sarojni Devi says this year’s Diwali will not be the same as she also lost her brother and her friend lost her husband.

Devi says she is fortunate as two of her daughters are employed.

Devi says fireworks are also expensive.

She says they will be also providing some families with groceries this Diwali.

Shawnal Kumar of Nausori says he and his mum are on reduced hours and they will have to make some sacrifices.

Kumar says he was expecting to celebrate this year’s Diwali with his brother who is in India but unfortunately he will not be able to come to Fiji due to travel restrictions.

He says they will probably have to forego fireworks this year.

Kumar adds Diwali will give them the opportunity to catch up with family and friends as they were unable to see each other due to restrictions.

Meanwhile, Ritesh Prasad of Khalsa Road says he is fortunate that he is employed and will take out some portion of his salary to help the underprivileged.

The 29-year-old says he will celebrate Diwali with his parents and wife.
