The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre is calling on every Fijian to stop being a bystander following the death of a woman in her 20s in Cunningham who was allegedly assaulted by her partner before she passed away.

FWCC Coordinator Shamima Ali says 40 women have died as a result of domestic violence in the last 7 years and to hear about the death of this young woman is heartbreaking.

Ali says if you see, hear or know of someone who is living with domestic violence, it is your duty as a caring citizen of our country to do the right thing and inform the authorities.

She says you can also call the FWCC on the toll free help line 1560 and save someone’s life by making it your business.

Ali says their phone lines are open 24/7 and as of Monday February 14th, they will reopen their Suva and Labasa centres for face to face counseling.

She is also urging every woman or girl who is facing issues to please come forward and speak to their counselors.

Ali says they are here and ready to assist you.

She says domestic violence, child abuse and violence against women and girls are no longer taboo subjects that can be swept under the carpet.

Ali says they are affecting the lives of too many Fijian people and we must work even harder than ever to bring an end to this national scourge.

She adds no woman, girl or child should fight this battle alone and together we can make a difference.

Ali says they are ready to come out to your community to raise awareness on this issue and they urge concerned individuals and community leaders to reach out to the Centre.

Meanwhile police have confirmed that no one has been charged yet in relation to the death of the woman in Cunningham on Tuesday.

She was admitted in a critical condition on January 26th after the alleged assault by the partner the day before.

The matter was reported to Police on 30th January.
