In a show of solidarity and support towards the workers in India, a few members of the Fiji Trades Union Congress and the National Union of Workers led by Fiji Trades Union Congress National Secretary Felix Anthony stood in front of the Indian High Commission office along Butt Street in Suva with petitions protesting to the Government of India about the rights of the workers in India.

While speaking to fijivillage News Anthony says the protest is all about supporting workers' and farmers' rights in India and the Fiji Trades Union Congress and the workers in this country stand firmly behind the workers in India and to ensure that their rights are respected, and that they're able to exercise their rights fully in India.

He says this protest is called by the International Trade Union Confederation for unions around the world to raise awareness and to demonstrate against the government of India to ensure that workers' rights are respected.

He adds the workers in India themselves today are going on a national strike and the FTUC is in full support of those workers and also to let the government of India know that the world is watching as to what they are doing.

Anthony says we expect no less than respect for human and workers' rights in India.

He adds the Fiji government has nothing to do with this as this is purely an action called by the International Trade Union Confederation, which is the world workers' body, and which the FTUC are affiliated.

He says the FTUC would like the Fijian government to raise human rights issues with the Indian government and says that it is universal as we have had other governments raise human rights issues with the Fijian government when our rights are being violated.

Anthony says that is the responsibility of any responsible government to ensure that human rights and workers' rights are respected.

He has also reaffirmed the union’s support towards the Indian workers in India and says the Indian workers have stood by us in our difficult times and the Fijian workers stand by them in their difficult times.

He says the Union will continue to support them as this is what trade union solidarity is all about.
