FNU offers free HIV/AIDS and STI clinics for students

The Fiji National University has taken great initiative as they are now offering free HIV/AIDS and STI screening clinics for their students, this is to enforce students’ wellness and public health.

According to the FNU's General Practitioner, Dr Henry Waqa, these screening programmes are a crucial part of the university's strategy to promote health and wellness on campus.

Dr Waqa says the goal is early detection and prevention of illnesses, as there is an increase in new HIV cases among the young people in Fiji.

He says early diagnosis can lead to lifesaving treatment and better health outcomes.

The FNU's General Practitioner says currently, free Point of Care Testing for HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis is available at the Nasinu UniClinic with plans to expand to the Natabua UniClinic soon.

Dr Waqa says point-of-care testing provides a rare opportunity for the students, as only a few clinics in Suva offer such services.

He says students can either make an appointment via email or walk in any weekday from 8am to 3.30pm, where the testing process is confidential.

He further says the test involves a simple finger prick, and results are available within 15 minutes.

FNU's General Practitioner adds that in the event of a positive result, they will provide comprehensive support, including counselling and referrals to the Hub Clinic for ongoing care and treatment.
