The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission says they have received complaints regarding the misuse of 'Halal' certifications by certain businesses for marketing purposes and has stressed that products and services marketed as "Halal/حالل" must meet the correct standards and not mislead consumers for commercial gain.

FCCC says in response, they will be working closely with the Fiji Muslim League to address these concerns, ensuring that religious certifications are used accurately and responsibly, reflecting the true nature of products and services.

CEO Joel Abraham says as a multicultural nation, it is crucial that the religious needs and rights of all Fijians are respected.

He says they are dedicated to ensuring that consumers are treated fairly and with respect, and this includes the accurate representation of products that meet religious requirements.

The Fiji Muslim League stressed the importance of leveraging this auspicious month of Ramadhan to showcase their dedication to environmental stewardship and the cultivation of sustainable practices apart from spiritual reflection and devotion during this holy month.

They say the aim is to instigate a ripple effect of positive transformation that extends well beyond the Holy month of Ramadhan, advocating for sustainability and conscientious and responsible consumption at all times.

Meanwhile, the FCCC and the Fiji Muslim League during this month of Ramadhan, will release regular messages that encourage actions such as reducing food waste, conserving energy and water, shopping ethically, environmentally friendly practices, and educating others on the importance of sustainability.

FCCC says in collaboration with the Fiji Muslim League will focus on promoting sustainable practices and enhancing consumer awareness in alignment with environmental, social, and governance goals.

They say this initiative underscores the commitment of both organisations to environmental, social, and governance goals and aligns closely with global Sustainable Development Goals and cultural values.

Abraham says this partnership reflects their dedication to fostering an inclusive, ethical, and environmentally friendly marketplace in Fiji.

He says they are particularly excited to address the cultural and religious needs of all consumers during this significant time, ensuring that the spirit of Ramadhan is celebrated sustainably.

Abraham says they also see this partnership as an opportunity to foster awareness of the SDGs and inspire the community to take action towards a more sustainable future.

FCCC says they are committed to upholding the religious rights and fair treatment of all consumers, ensuring that Fiji remains a vibrant and multicultural nation.

They say let us make this Ramadhan a time of positive impact and mindful consumption and add that by taking small steps together, we can contribute to the larger goals of sustainability and fairness in our society.
