A Prohibition Notice has been issued to Energy Fiji Limited after following investigations into reports of an oil discharge at their Sigatoka Pump Station.

The Ministry of Environment says inspections were conducted immediately after receiving reports of oil based discharge from community members of Vunavutu and Nasama.

They say inspectors from the Waste Management and Pollution Control division confirmed that the discharge originated from the EFL pump station, samples were collected for further testing, and it was confirmed the discharge was waste-oil from the pump site.

The Ministry says the inspection team has since revisited the site and engaged with EFL.

They say EFL has been ordered by the Ministry to immediately take corrective action and issued a Prohibition Notice detailing the nature of the activity and breach of environmental regulations, and the corrective measures that must be taken to rectify the situation.

The Ministry adds the Prohibition Notice will only be lifted once the Ministry is satisfied that EFL has successfully contained the oil spill, and implemented robust mitigation measures to prevent future incidents.
