Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad says all educational institutions built by the Girmitya community were created not just for their descendants but to serve all races in Fiji.

Speaking at the Shree Krishna Leela festival held at Nanuku Sangam School grounds in Rakiraki yesterday, Prof. Prasad says this is the first time he has learned of a community in Fiji celebrating the festival.

Prasad says the celebration showcases the prestige, culture, civilization, and language left behind by their ancestors despite the hardships endured during the indenture system.

Prasad draws a parallel between the festival and the teachings of Lord Shree Krishna.

He says the world today is a battleground and it needs figures like Shree Krishna and Arjuna to uphold cosmic order and law (dharma).

He adds that the festival is not just a cultural event but also a celebration of the rich heritage and timeless lessons passed down by Lord Shree Krishna.

He says it is a cherished occasion for our entire community in fostering the spirit of harmony, spiritual enrichment, togetherness and the promotion of good morals and instilling values in younger generations.
