The Ministry of Education says they wish to inform those teachers who are currently looking for employment with the Ministry that they are recruiting teachers to fill the vacancies created by exits in 2021.

The Ministry says last year, 493 teachers exited the Ministry for a number of reasons, including resignation, retirement, death and termination.

The Ministry is filling some of these vacancies through redeployment of surplus teachers and the remaining vacant positions will be filled by recruiting new teachers.

They say teachers must have teacher training qualifications which must include the practicum component and all recruitment will be carried out in accordance with the Open Merit Recruitment Selection process.

The Ministry further says in the current recruitment phase, the Ministry is recruiting teachers for Early Childhood Education, Special/Inclusive Education, Primary and Secondary to fill the current vacant posts and to create a pool of teachers to fill any vacancies that may arise during the year.

It adds for Secondary schools, the Ministry needs teachers in Industrial Arts, Mathematics, Physics, Home Economics, Computing, and PEMAC.

The Ministry also says for secondary teachers, there is no immediate vacancy to fill in other subject areas. These subjects are Biology, Chemistry, Accounting, Economics, Agriculture, English, Geography, History, Hindi, Vosa vakaviti, and Urdu. The pool will be valid for 12 months to fill positions.

The Ministry highlighted that each year, about 300 - 400 teachers exit the service and the Ministry carries out recruitment to fill these positions adding that the Ministry is aware of the fact that each year over 700 pre-service teachers graduate from the various Teacher Training Institutions.

It says however, the Ministry is not able to absorb all these graduates within that year.

They say the recruitment process includes qualification checks, written job tests and interviews and once the applicant meets the Minimum Qualification Requirement, then he or she is called for a job test. If applicants pass the job tests based on the threshold, then they are contacted for the interviews. The Ministry requests graduates and teachers to apply online using the Ministry’s online portal and applications will close on the 25th of February, 2022.
