Minister for Education, Premila Kumar

The Ministry of Education has today received more than 28,000 story books, 17 desktop computers and other resources from Vision Fiji that will help improve literacy for students.

While receiving the resources, Minister for Education, Premila Kumar says giving these books and delivering it to schools does not mean that the children have read it so school teachers need to make an effort to read the books to the children.

She says teachers need to make sure that they have a session with the students where they can read the books or they can take the books home and read it in front of the parents who can then guide them.

Kumar adds the desktop for special education schools will certainly add to the list of resources.

The Minister says they would like to have a lot more digital tools in our schools to help teach children in a blended form rather than just one way which is simply straight from the books and chalk and talk.

Vision Fiji Chairperson, Gazala Akbar says they are also handing over access to the digital tool called Learning Pro that will allow teachers to determine reading levels, match to books and implement improvement plans for the students.

She says the other online resource available for students is Bookflix which is a digital literacy resource that has 120 animated fiction and non-fiction stories.
