According to the Fiji Meteorological Services in Nadi, October was a very dry month across the Fiji Group, with less than half the normal rainfall recorded at majority of the places.

The Meteorological Services says Matei Airfield in Taveuni and Savusavu registered a record-lowest total monthly rainfall for October since observations began in 1956.

They say an El Niño event is established in the tropical Pacific.

An El Niño event usually suppresses rainfall activity over the Fiji Group.

The Services says while rainfall activity is expected to increase as we progress into the wet season from this month, it may not be as much as what Fiji normally experiences due to the effects of the current El Niño event.

It adds that conditions in the Southwest Pacific may become favourable for rainfall-producing systems next week.

The Meteorological Services says this is due to an expected active Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) pulse in our region, which usually brings increased tropical weather activities at this time of the year.

They say consequently, parts of the country may experience some relieving rainfall later next week from an anticipated trough of low pressure.
