This is a time to share, rejoice and put behind our resentments and hard feelings.

This was the sentiment of the Minister for Education Rosy Akbar while wishing teachers and students a safe and happy Diwali.

Akbar says children should spend time with their families and loved ones and must reflect on what they have achieved in the past, and their hopes and ambitions for the future.

She says Diwali also teaches discipline, goodness, divinity, humility, tolerance, togetherness and kindness and as parents and guardians it is their responsibility to inculcate these values in our children.

Akbar says parents and guardians are urged to be vigilant during the festivity and supervise children when they are playing with firecrackers.

She says while we want the children of Fiji to engage in unity and brotherhood to celebrate and enjoy the festival of lights, they also have their safety and wellbeing at heart.

Akbar says Diwali is celebrated to mark the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, both in and around us.

She adds like all religious festivals celebrated in Fiji, Diwali is celebrated with our families and friends.

She says it is a time to share, rejoice and put behind our resentments and hard feelings.
