The Minister for Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka has offered his condolences to the family of the 8-year-old boy from Tacirua who was swept away by strong currents yesterday.

Ditoka confirms that reports have been received on flash flooding within the Central Division and are being closely monitored by the Commissioner Central and his team.

He says that he has been advised that there was a casualty where an eight-year-old boy from Tacirua was swept away by strong currents.

The Minister is reminding parents and guardians to ensure that children are under strict supervision during this rainy weather.

He is also pleading with the general public to refrain from attempting to swim or cross flooded roads, rivers, streams and walkways.

He says life is precious, and people must value it simply by adhering to advisories issued by authorities.

Commissioner Central, Josefa Navuku, says things may change during high tide, so they are closely working with the Fiji Police Force to monitor red zone areas.

NDMO Director Vasiti Soko says Government officials on the ground are monitoring and reporting on areas that have been inundated with water and NDMO will continue to update the public on the necessary actions to be taken.

She confirms that no evacuation centre has been activated in all four divisions, and she also echoes the plea made by the Minister on the need for the public to stay away from flooded roads, streams, rivers, drains and walkways.

Soko says people must seriously heed warnings issued by authorities to avoid any unnecessary loss of life in the future.
