Digicel Fiji and Telstra have announced their support for Diabetes Fiji with a strong focus on improving the lives of those affected by Type 1 Diabetes.

They have a One Child, One Machine program where 50 underprivileged children will be assisted by one machine each to monitor their sugar level.

The Group Executive of Telstra Enterprise, David Burns says diabetes is a growing concern that has devastating health effects on individuals and the economy.

Burns says the diabetes machine will help in driving awareness and education that will allow individuals take control of their health.

He further says the support is just over $40,000 and they aim to establish a lasting emotional connection with the organization and also hopes that others will be inspired to join the cause and work collectively to fight against diabetes.

The Project Officer of Diabetes Fiji, Kini Marawa says the effects of diabetes are alarming, in 2021 according to the International Diabetes Federation 17.7% adults in Fiji have diabetes.

Marawa acknowledges Digicel Fiji’s contribution towards providing accessible health services.

18-year-old Gillian Kumar who is a Type 1 Diabetes patient says she had symptoms which was later confirmed.

Kumar says she faces little challenges in her studies due to fluctuating sugar levels. She focuses on her diet to control her health condition and to enjoy her life just like her friends do.
