Defending champions of the Digicel/Ram’s Cleaning Services Fiji Primary Schools Football IDC, Rewa have started the competition with a 2-1 win over Nalawa at Garvey Park.

Rewa is pooled in Group A with Nadi, Nalawa, Tavua and Dreketi.

20 district teams are participating in the competition.

After the conclusion of day 1, Nadi, Nasinu, Seaqaqa and Rakiraki are leading their respective pools.

Group B has Nasinu, Suva, Labasa, Taveuni and Nadroga.

Group C has Seaqaqa, Navua, North West Nadroga, Bua and Tailevu

Group D has Ba, Rakiraki, Lautoka, Navosa and Nadogo.

While speaking at the opening of the competition, Permanent Secretary for Education, Doctor Anjeela Jokhan says one can take the lessons learnt in any sporting arena, back into the community and become a patriotic and law abiding citizen.

Doctor Jokhan says if everyone did this, the crime rate in Fiji will gradually decrease, making everyone safe.

She says she wants to emphasise the importance of having the discipline not just on the field but off the field and in every aspect.

The Permanent Secretary informed the participants that sports open doors to many career opportunities without restricting or limiting students to traditional jobs or academic achievements. She also says sports is an important aspect of every person’s life and helps in improving our health as well as teaches us good qualities such as hard work, patience, respect, teamwork and discipline both on and off the field.

Doctor Jokhan also says every school should also make sure that their students attain these mentioned skills by participating in extra-curricular activities throughout the year.

She further says it is all about making wise choices and of course fighting peer pressure which is present in all areas of life whether it be a classroom or sporting arena.
