Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew has clarified that the crime rate in the country has decreased after questions were raised based on the statements made by the Opposition members in Parliament that crimes have increased after the change of government.

The Acting Commissioner says for them, they see that people are coming up with the perception but when you look at perception and reality, the statistics itself says it is a decrease.

Chew says Police will continue its work in trying to manage whatever is speculated out there by the general public and in social media.

He adds they will continue their work as police officers and manage what they are supposed to do which is mandated in the Police Act.

Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua says the protection of the people, particularly the most vulnerable in the community, is paramount to the Ministry.

He says crimes against women and children have reduced significantly over the last period.

Tikoduadua says from the statistics provided to him, crimes against women have been reduced by 4 percent and against children is 14 percent.

He adds police have actually increased their detection rate regarding the complaints lodged through them.
