Corrections Service notes an increase in HIV cases following extensive testing across all institutions

Due to the spike that may be attributed to recent drug needle use from inmates before their sentencing to remand, the Fiji Corrections Service has embarked on an extensive HIV testing initiative across all its institutions to ensure the health and well-being of all individuals under their care.

They say recent results from these tests have indicated a marked increase in positive HIV cases, predominantly concentrated in their receiving centres, particularly among remand inmates.

The Corrections Service says they are collaborating closely with the Ministry of Health to establish and implement a comprehensive and suitable treatment regime for those affected.

They say ensuring the health and safety of inmates is their top priority, and they are committed to providing the necessary medical care and support.

The Corrections Service says all personal information, including the identities of inmates, is handled with the utmost confidentiality by legislative requirements.

They say their goal is to maintain the dignity and privacy of every individual while addressing this public health issue effectively.

The Corrections Service adds remain dedicated to the well-being of the community and will continue to take proactive measures to address health concerns within their institutions.
