The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service has taken another step towards strengthening security at the border with the launch of the Container Control Programme at the FRCS Complex in Nasese, Suva.

Acting Chief Executive Officer, Fane Vave says the creation of a dedicated risk profiling team to identify potential illicit and non-compliant shipments will mark another step of FRCS to address threats in the region.

The Container Control Programme has been funded by the Australian Border Force as part of its commitment to work together with Pacific nations to strengthen regional borders.

The Australian Border Force partnered with United Nations Office on Drug and Crime and World Customs Organization to implement the Container Control Programme.

Vave says Fiji is a central hub for sea and air cargo in the Oceania region and has trade links to Australia and New Zealand as well as other countries.

She adds this is a significant accomplishment for Fiji as they are the first Customs Administration within the Oceania Region to administer the Container Control Programme.

Speaking at the launch, Australia’s High Commissioner to Fiji, John Feakes says Australia remains committed to working with Fijian Authorities to enhance regional border security and further strengthen the relationship.
