The Consumer Council of Fiji condemns the sale of substandard products after witnessing some supermarkets selling rotten potatoes.

The Council says the rotten potatoes were still sitting on the shelves with products that should have been discarded and being sold at full price.

They say similar cases have been identified in the past, raising concerns over the lack of accountability in the food retail industry.

The Council is calling on supermarket owners that this is unacceptable and a direct violation of consumer rights.

They say consumers have the right to expect quality products and it is the responsibility of supermarkets to ensure that the items they sell are safe and fresh.

They add that they are working diligently to remove these products from shelves but it is clear that the issue is ongoing.

They urge consumers to choose supermarkets that respect their rights to quality goods and boycott those selling poor-quality products.

Consumers are urged to contact the Consumer Council of Fiji on their national toll-free line 155 if they witness such actions from supermarkets.

Meanwhile, we have reached out to the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission for comments on how they plan to deal with these recurring incidents. They are yet to respond.

Stay with us for developments.
