The Suva City Council Health Department and the Consumer Council of Fiji are currently on the ground inspecting supermarkets that have been selling rotten meat.

SCC Acting Director Health, Naresh Narayan says the maximum fine a trader can face if they are in breach of the Food Safety Regulations is $50,000 or 10 years imprisonment or both.

Narayan says they are almost done with their inspection and monitoring and he will give an update tomorrow on the number of supermarkets that have allegedly breached the Food Safety Regulations by selling rotten meat.

Meanwhile the Consumer Council CEO, Seema Shandil says a few supermarkets will be taken to court.

Shandil says some supermarkets knew that they were selling rotten meat.

Shandil says they confiscated 199.70kg of rotten meat from a supermarket in Suva City last week.

She says consumers are urged to continue alerting the Council of any unethical practices in the market place through their National Consumer Helpline toll-free number, 155.
