26-year-old Mosese Colata

With the last minute Diwali preparations taking place, we caught up with some Suva residents who are looking forward to celebrating Diwali today.

26-year-old Mosese Colata says he is looking forward to spending Diwali at home with his family and enjoying food, sweets, lights and colour.

He says Diwali is a beautiful celebration and culture and he has gotten his Kurta or traditional Indian wear sewn and will be wearing it at home.

He says he bought firecrackers for his nephews and nieces at home as he did not want them to miss out on celebrations.

He adds even though the cost of living has gone up people still try and go all out.

Meanwhile, Mausam Ali who sells snacks at the Suva Bus stand says the Diwali has come at a bad time as he has to work hard and only get to enjoy Diwali with the family in the afternoon.

Ali says he is planing on visiting his friends this evening to celebrate Diwali and is looking forward to sharing sweets with everyone.

Nilesh Dutt of Seaqaqa, Labasa says his family is preparing well for Diwali.

He adds they have decorated their houses with lights and rangoli and the women are busy making Diwali sweets.

He says last year the COVID-19 pandemic hit and there was some restrictions but this year people are eager for Diwali and are moving freely.
