Alleged murderer Tevita Kunawave today at court.

Charging officer Laisa Kauyaca who is a prosecution witness in the trial of alleged murderer Tevita Kunawave says the accused had made a statement saying it was not his intention to kill his youngest daughter.

While being examined by Assistant DPP Elizabeth Rice, Kauyaca also said Kunawave had sought forgiveness and asked for a second chance as he was the only breadwinner of the family.

In cross-examination, defence lawyer Thomson Lee from the Legal Aid Commission asked the prosecution witness why the defence did not receive Kunawave's statement until the 5th of this month.

Kauyaca said the investigating officer should have handed it over and maybe he overlooked it.

Lee then put to Kauyaca that Kunawave did not make a statement but the prosecution witness maintained that Kunawave did make that statement.

Kunawave who is a former soldier is charged with a count of murder for allegedly killing his baby in October last year by throwing a concrete block through the window that hit the baby’s forehead.

The prosecution has closed their case and Kunawave will give evidence today.
