MPs who voted against pay rise increase should donate it to charity - Aiyaz

Look who's talking – hypocrite.

That’s the comment posted by Opposition MP, Mosese Bulitavu regarding Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum after Bulitavu said that in a funny twist now Sayed-Khaiyum is attacking members of the Opposition Group of 16 in Parliament who did not support the increase in remuneration but are now benefitting from the increase in pay and salaries.

Sayed-Khaiyum had posted that all those MPs who voted against the morally and ethically unacceptable pay rise and increase in benefits for themselves, or abstained from the vote, should not benefit from the pay rise that all the others voted for.

He says if they then were genuine in their opposition or abstention then they should have by now (or can still - not too late) donated the money to a worthy charitable organisation or set up a trust to pool their funds together and give it to a charitable organisation to help ordinary Fijians.

Bulitavu highlights that last week in Parliament the Standing Committee of Foreign Affairs and Defence tabled its review report on the Annual Reports of the Office of the Attorney General from 2006 to 2023.

He says two former FijiFirst Ministers under Sayed-Khaiyum's time in the Opposition Group of 16 laughed, given they were forced to table their Ministry's Annual Reports by Sayed-Khaiyum but he himself never updated his Annual Reports that the current Attorney General only tabled this year.

Bulitavu says Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum was sleeping on the job.

He says last week in Parliament, the Presidential Pension Act was reviewed to align the term of the President from 5 years to 3 years in accordance with the 2013 Constitution.

Bulitavu says since the inception of the 2013 Constitution, Sayed-Khaiyum could not re-align it to be consistent with the 2013 Constitution.

He adds last week also in Parliament, Deputy Prime Minister, Manoa Kamikamica revealed the Walesi audit findings where millions of taxpayers dollars was wasted under Walesi's management over the years that has now been reported to FICAC.

Bulitavu says during that time Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum was a super Minister and was also responsible for Communications where FBC and Walesi were under.

He says Sayed-Khaiyum now wants to stand on a high moral ground advising those who voted against the increase in remuneration and benefits to donate the money to a worthy charitable organisation.

He asks did Sayed-Khaiyum during his 16 years of earning more than the MPs ever donate his salary to charity and did he make it public or were they invested elsewhere locally and overseas.

Bulitavu says when Sayed-Khaiyum was Attorney General and Minister for Economy 2014-2022 he earned about $200,000 per year. He says that does not include his salary and benefits from 2007-2013.

He says the MPs’ salary was pegged at $50,000 per year under the Parliamentary Remuneration Act 2014 as a dictatorial tool to weaken the Opposition MPs from serving and visiting the community.

He labels Sayed-Khaiyum’s comments as cheap politics and bad diversion tactics.
