If you are attending events at any facility managed by Fiji Sports Council such as FMF Gymnasium or ANZ Stadium then please take your own water bottles that you can refill.

This comes as the partnership between the Council and the Ministry of Environment was announced during the Global Recycling Day event at McDonald's Laucala Beach.

Council CEO, Litiana Loabuka says they incur a cost for flushing out plastic bottles and waste from drains at the council facilities as it could cause flooding on the pitch.

She is also urging the thousands of students who are attending school athletics zone meets and will later attend the Coca Cola Games at the council facilities around the country to put their waste in the recycle bins that are provided and also bring their own reusable water bottles. Loabuka says the Ministry has committed to placing water fountains at the council facilities.

Meanwhile, McDonald's Fiji has become the first company in Fiji to pledge to become waste free by 2025 as the Minister for Environment has launched the Zero Waste Business Certification Program for the Private Sector during Global Recycling Day.

Development Partner, Marc McElrath says he does not know how much waste is produced by McDonald's in a year but they do know that they are a major contributor to waste in Fiji.

He says the plastic they are using is an issue but they have gone away from using plastic straws to using paper straws. They are using bamboo cutlery, instead of using plastic cutlery and they also intend to replace the plastic lids for paper cups.
