People are being urged to be cautious of alleged pyramid schemes now in operation as some groups are targeting Fijians to join multi-level marketing companies that have been using COVID-19 to make deceptive recruiting claims.

Consumer Council of Fiji’s Chief Executive Officer, Seema Shandil says there has been a spike in pyramid schemes globally and this is usually framed as a business opportunity where they claim the scheme is a quick way of making money.

Shandil says the offers are too good to be true and they are now receiving information that some groups have held meetings in the past few weeks in Fiji.

She says people should also be wary of those asking for cash upfront for these get rich quick schemes.

Shandil says people should also check if the company is listed with the Registrar of Companies in Fiji.

She says in times of hardship, it can be tempting for people to give in to these offers however the scammers are trying to take advantage of people’s fears.

Shandil also says there are no financial shortcuts to wealth.

She says if you are not sure about any investment opportunities that is being marketed to you, please seek advice from the Consumer Council of Fiji, Registrar of Companies or the Legal Aid Commission.

Shandil is also asking people to contact them on the toll free line 155 if they have any complaints or concerns.
