Automatic progression has created a culture of complacency among students, teachers and parents where the students may not feel the need to put in the required effort to achieve academic excellence as their promotion to the next grade is somewhat guaranteed, regardless of the academic performance.

This has been highlighted by Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro during the consultation on the repealing or retention of automatic progression at Suva Grammar School where stakeholders and teachers have come together to give their views.

Radrodro says preparing students who have not mastered the foundational knowledge and skills of their current grade and are promoted to the next grade results in learning gaps, which accumulate over time, and thus, low examination performance of students.

He says voices are critical as this initiative is not just an administrative exercise, but it is a transformative process that will shape the future of education and development in Fiji.

Radrodro adds they aim to develop a system that enhances the quality and standards of progression of students by benchmarking against international standards.
