An Australian family has set up a GoFundMe page for a family member who is currently in an induced coma in Australia after allegedly stabbing himself during an argument with his wife while visiting Fiji.

Divisional Police Commander West SSP Iakobo Vaisewa says the initial report received earlier was that the man allegedly stabbed himself during an argument with his wife.

SSP Vaisewa says the man sought medical assistance at a private hospital, and was referred to the Ba Aspen Hospital and later to the Lautoka Hospital.

He says it was an alleged self-inflicted wound.

Meanwhile, 7 News reported that the Australian tourist who was due to check in for his flight back to Victoria was instead admitted to a Fijian hospital with mysterious stab wounds.

Friends of the man have asked for urgent help after he was due to return home on May 1st, but the 43-year-old was reportedly in an induced coma due to the severity of his condition and the onset of sepsis to his stomach wounds.

According to the National Crime Agency (NCA), the Australian man’s family only discovered his condition after they began phoning hospitals.

Step-brother Matthew Davis found he was in the Nadi Intensive Care Unit after he failed to turn up for his flight and was not answering his phone.

Davis told NCA that they had a bad feeling there was something going on, so they called the hospitals to see if by chance he was at any of the hospitals.

His father says the shock of hearing about his son’s condition was only added to after learning the cost of repatriating him would be hundreds of thousands of dollars.

His mother told 7News that total medical costs were upwards of A$220,000, and owing to the patient’s condition, the medical evacuation flight alone would be A$160,000.

Now repatriated, the man currently remains in a coma at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital.

The family have set up a GoFundMe page, which has so far raised A$27,500.

Matthew Davis says he had set up the donations page on Friday for “life-saving interventions” for his step-brother.

His father told 7News that any traveller planning on going overseas without proper insurance was silly.

We have sent questions to the Health Ministry. They are yet to respond.
