Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad

The ACT Government and high-level trade delegation from Canberra received a warm Fijian welcome from the Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad at the Grand Pacific Hotel.

While acknowledging the great support rendered by the Australian Government to Fiji, Professor Prasad says Australia remains Fiji’s largest trading partner, a major source of tourism, and a key investor in the economy.

He says during times of crisis—whether the COVID-19 pandemic, natural disasters, or Fiji’s broader development needs—Australia has always stood beside us, and for that, we are sincerely grateful.

Professor Prasad further says Fiji and Australia share a relationship built on mutual respect, trust, and shared values.

He adds whether through trade and investment, people-to-people ties, or government-to-government collaboration, the partnership continues to grow from strength to strength.

The Acting Prime Minister says Fiji is committed to taking this relationship to new heights and is open for business.

Professor Prasad says they are actively promoting greater foreign direct investment and private sector participation, underpinned by political stability, democratic governance, the rule of law, and respect for fundamental freedoms—values that both nations hold dear.

He also highlighted that Fiji’s economy is thriving, and there are exciting opportunities for business now.

Professor Prasad says Fiji's business environment is strong, and the Government is continuously implementing reforms to improve it further.

He says they are removing restrictions, reducing the cost of doing business, and enhancing investor confidence to make Fiji an even more attractive investment destination.

The Minister for Finance says a range of tax incentives is also available for businesses looking to establish and expand in Fiji.

He adds Fiji is experiencing remarkable growth across key sectors, including tourism, renewable energy, ICT, and agribusiness.

The Minister says the tourism industry is expanding into eco-tourism and luxury hospitality, while investments in renewable energy are unlocking new opportunities for sustainable ventures.

He says Fiji is also positioning itself as a regional leader in outsourcing and digital services, offering Australian companies access to a skilled and cost-effective workforce.

He adds travel restrictions between the two countries have eased, thanks to the relaxation of certain visa application processes and cost reductions last year.

While thanking the Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, Ewen McDonald, for support in making this happen, Professor Prasad adds that he believe that more can be done—particularly in achieving visa-free travel between Fiji and Australia, which would further strengthen our people-to-people ties and business engagements.
