Fiji has received an additional $9 million of funding from the Australian Government for the DFAT Cyclone Recovery Program.

Australian High Commission in Fiji Chargé d'affaires Stuart Watts says through this program, they are already constructing nine schools and the first of these schools is due to be completed by next month.

He says they understand school is the heart of the economy and the buildings they are constructing are not like other schools in Fiji.

Watts says they are investing in designer schools of the future for the country and the buildings are environmentally sustainable, constructed from locally sourced materials, and equipped with solar power.

He adds the funding will also include the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Vunisea Hospital in Kadavu and the Waiyevo Hospital in Taveuni.

The Australian Chargé d'affaires also highlighted that they will provide full furniture for the schools that they will build.

Deputy Prime Minsiter and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad acknowledged the continuous support from the Australian Government.

He says the funding will be used to complete the schools and rehabilitate two health centres.
