Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Government has so far paid $1.6 million for the private general practitioners scheme and around 58,425 people have benefitted from this scheme.

$5 million was allocated for this scheme in the 2021/2022 National Budget.

Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says when the scheme was initially rolled out in June last year, around 1,400 patients were seen on a weekly basis which has increased to around 1,700 patients a week over the last couple of months.

Sayed-Khaiyum says it was also announced in the budget that they will increase the type of services that will be made available in this scheme.

The Attorney General says as announced in the revised budget, they want to expand this scheme and have received 28 expressions of interest in a number of new areas.

Sayed-Khaiyum says they will be announcing the names of the new private general practitioners next week.

He has also revealed they have received 6 expressions of interest for the private dental practitioners scheme.
