Minister for Education Premila Kumar.

Minister for Education Premila Kumar says they are concerned with the small percentage of teachers who have failed to keep their qualification and registration up to date.

Kumar says around 1,000 teachers have limited authority to teach and need to upgrade their qualification.

She says these teachers did not have teacher training qualification and the Teachers Registration Board reported that some of them have not upgraded since 2019.

Kumar says it is equally disappointing to note that around 538 teachers did not bother to renew their Teacher Registration Certificate.

She also questioned if the members of the Opposition and unions are encouraging unqualified teachers in the classroom.

The Minister says she has always praised the work of the teachers, heads of schools and school committees for their dedication and commitment to education.

She says they are grateful and praise the majority of teachers who have made all efforts to keep their qualification and registration up to date.

Kumar also highlighted that the recently concluded COP26 in Glasgow is an example of the significance of Fiji’s participation and this was not understood by the members of the Opposition, politically biased NGO’s and individuals.

She says the Prime Minister did not only represent Fiji but was also part of the Pacific Islands Forum members as the current Chairman.

Kumar says the critics had said that the trip was a waste of taxpayers money but this backfired when they came to know that the Fiji delegation was funded by donors.

She says there is no shame in asking the high emitters to pay for the climate mitigation and adaptation in small island states like Fiji.
