FICAC Team Leader Investigations, Milika Cakacaka has revealed in the trial of SODELPA MP, Niko Nawaikula that an anonymous person had made the complaint against him.

It is alleged that Nawaikula gave false information about his residence to the then Secretary-General to Parliament while claiming for parliamentary allowances.

Nawaikula allegedly falsely stated that his permanent place of residence was in Buca village, Buca Bay and allegedly obtained $20,201.35 between August 2019 and April 2020.

Nawaikula’s Lawyer, Sevuloni Valenitabua asked Cakacaka if the complainant has been identified and called as a witness in court.

Cakacaka responded by saying no.

When questioned by FICAC’s Deputy Commissioner, Rashmi Aslam if they receive complaints from whistle-blowers or anonymous persons, Cakacaka says they do and ensure the identity of the complainants is protected.

Earlier today, FICAC Investigating Officer Kuliniasi Saumi had also confirmed in court that he travelled to Buca Village in Vanua Levu on the 24th of August, 2020 and told Nawaikula that he had to caution interview him.

Saumi also told the court that Nawaikula cooperated and agreed to be interviewed the next day.

The Prosecution witness also revealed that they had to interview him again a month later when they found out that Nawaikula was in Nadi in a public consultation. During cross-examination, Nawaikula’s lawyer, Sevuloni Valenitabua questioned Saumi if he had a warrant when he arrested Nawaikula from Buca Village and Nadi. Saumi told the court he did not have a warrant.

When questioned if they are allowed to arrest a person without a warrant, Saumi told the court they can do so if they suspect a person has committed an offence and that is under the FICAC Act.

Prosecution have wrapped up their case while defence will start calling their witnesses from Monday. Nawaikula will also take the stand.

Meanwhile, FICAC has also charged SODELPA MPs Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, Salote Radrodro, Simione Rasova, Peceli Vosanibola and Adi Litia Qionibaravi and former FijiFirst MP Vijendra Prakash with a count of Giving False Information to a Public Servant and one count each of Obtaining Financial Advantage.
