Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says adoption of new technology has assisted Fiji in the management of COVID-19 in the country.

While speaking during the Virtual World Summit on the Information Society Forum, Sayed-Khaiyum says Fiji collaborated with Singapore and developed the careFIJI app. He says Singapore provided the source code and Fiji tweaked the app for our purposes.

He says careFIJI is already a very essential tool and there has been over 270,000 downloads.

Sayed-Khaiyum says they are also using various portals to assist those who are unemployed after COVID-19.

Sayed-Khaiyum says they are also preparing well through the vaccine registry which will assist in eventually getting tourists back in and also get Fijians to travel again.

He also says with the recent severe lockdown, the government used the quickest way to disburse the funds through money wallets.

Sayed-Khaiyum says a platform was developed for requests and the money was disbursed through money wallets and people also accessed it using QR Codes.

He says they have also made concerted efforts in the regulation of an independent body to look at wholesale prices of broadband data.

Sayed-Khaiyum says 10GB cost about $20 in Fiji a few years ago and within 18 months, it dropped to as low as $1.

He also says we are also seeing people doing home deliveries and ordering online.

The Fijian government was also commended in the forum for managing to leverage digital platforms to provide e-services to the people.
