A New Start at USP

Starting a new academic journey is always a significant milestone, and for 18-year-old Merewairita Raseka, it is a dream finally coming true.

A first-year student at The University of the South Pacific (USP), Raseka is about to pursue her Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Public Administration) degree at the Laucala Campus in Suva.

The Natuva, Tai-Vugalei native is determined to make the most of her university experience and looks forward to the beginning of the semester.

Raseka’s journey to USP was inspired by her sister, Litiana Ranadirua, a second-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce in Professional Accounting. Her insights and experiences at USP played a crucial role in Raseka’s decision-making process.

“My sister has always shared with me the opportunities and challenges she’s encountered at USP, and hearing about her experiences made me excited to start my journey here,” she said.

Delighted by her sister’s choice to join USP, Ranadirua vows to support her every step of the way. “I’m so happy that she has chosen to come to USP because it feels great to have her with me. I know she will do great things,” she shared.

“I’ll make sure to look after her, guide her, and be a helper whenever she needs assistance with her studies. We’re in this together and I want her to succeed.”

Impressed by USP’s reputation, global recognition and programme offering after attending the 2024 USP Open Day, Raseka chose USP and is eager to pursue higher education not just to earn a degree but to build a better future for herself and her family.

“I want to make my family proud and be able to support them as best as I can. My education is my stepping stone to a better future,” she said.

Beyond academics, Raseka is excited to meet new people who will guide her throughout her student journey.

“I am looking forward to connecting with people all over the region and learning from their diverse perspectives. Forging relationships with my peers and professors is going to be key in my growth as a student and also as an individual.”

When asked about recommending USP to prospective students, Raseka is full of praise for the institution.

“USP is a university that develops you academically and socially. The education is top-notch, and it opens doors regionally and globally,” she emphasised.

She also appreciated the flexibility USP offers, allowing students to choose from a wide range of programmes that cater to their interests and career aspirations.

“It’s great that I have the freedom to explore courses across different fields. This is exactly what I need to figure out how best I can use my skills for a successful career.”

As Raseka embarks on this new chapter, she remains focused on her goals and is ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities that come with university life.

“I know it’s going to be tough, but I’m excited for all that I’m going to learn and achieve and with the support of USP’s academic community, I’m rest assured that my journey will be both enriching and rewarding,” she concludes.

Semester 1 Applications are Open until Friday 21 February 2025. Students can submit their applications online via www.usp.ac.fj/apply or visit the nearest USP campus. New and continuing students must also register for courses online via https://studentsols.usp.ac.fj/
