98 Driver Licences have been cancelled while 4 Driver Licences have been suspended from the 1st of August 2023 to 1st of March 2024 by the Land Transport Authority due to reckless driving and traffic violations.

LTA have also issued 921 warning letters for the same period, out of which 465 warning letters were issued in the Central Eastern Division, 384 in the West and 72 in the Northern Division while 18 drivers were counselled for unsafe driving.

When fijivillage News questioned what is the Authority doing regarding the unsafe drivers, LTA Acting Chief Executive Officer, Irimaia Rokosawa says continued reckless behaviour on Fiji’s roads would not be tolerated, and the Authority would not hesitate to suspend or cancel the driver's licence for repeat offenders.

He says they will continue to strongly emphasise its resolve to enforce traffic rules and regulations, ensuring that drivers understand the consequences.

Rokosawa says they continue to take a firm stance against reckless driving and repeated road traffic offences as this is part of the Authority’s ongoing efforts to curb dangerous driving which poses a significant risk on drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

He says these measures aim to ensure the safety of all road users and reduce the incidence of preventable accidents due to speeding, dangerous and careless driving behaviours.

The Acting CEO says driver licence cancellations and suspensions are decisive actions against irresponsible driving as these measures underscore the authority’s commitment to prioritising road safety.

Rokosawa says road safety education and enforcement teams remain dedicated to fostering awareness and ensuring adherence to road safety regulations and standards. This commitment extends to educational programs in schools, public spaces and communities.

The Authority is also encouraging all road users to prioritise safety during the Easter weekend by adopting responsible driving habits.

Meanwhile, 149 drink and drive cases were recorded from the 15th of December last year to the 31st of January this year.
