Around 800 Fijians from the Lau Group are stuck in Viti Levu due to the restrictions placed upon inter-island travel because of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bula Ko Lau forum administrator, Samisoni Pareti says some of the people came to the mainland for medical reasons, secondary school competitions and family visits but were unable to travel back due to the restriction.

He says one of the stories he heard from those stuck is that 7 of them came to Viti Levu to deliver their babies, one of them has passed away and the six mothers are waiting for the announcement for travel restrictions to be lifted.

Pareti says they came to Viti Levu on the 2nd of March and it has been a struggle for them to cater for the needs of their newborn babies when they are residing in the Capital City.

He adds all the mothers have received one dose of the vaccine and are waiting for their second jab.

Another woman from Kabara says they are thankful for the continuous support provided to those from the islands and are stuck on Viti Levu.

She is pleading to Fijians who will be travelling back to the Lau Group that it is best to get fully vaccinated so they do not transmit the virus on the island.

She also stated that getting fully vaccinated will make it easier and quicker for them to return home.

Around 65% of the eligible population in the Lau Group are fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
