Lautoka Hospital.

Leptospirosis continues to be of great concern particularly in the Western Division as 7 people are currently admitted in the ICU ward at the Lautoka Hospital requiring ventilation.

17 people have so far died because of Leptospirosis in the West.

There are 11 admissions in non-ICU wards at the Lautoka Hospital which includes 4 cases that were previously in the ICU ward.

The Permanent Secretary for Health, Doctor James Fong says their team in Lautoka have estimated that in the recent past, at least 70% of admissions in the ICU have been due to Leptospirosis.

Dr Fong says their outreach team in Navosa is currently wrapping up operations following a successful campaign in the Navosa medical area.

He says the new area of concern is the Ra medical area where they have noted a marked increase in cases and hospitalisations.

Dr Fong says they will be establishing support to the Ra Subdivision Medical Team on Monday by mobilizing a FEMAT team to look after Rakiraki Hospital and get the hospital team to conduct outreach services to bulk up primary health care services in the community.

He says this will improve their ability to access hard-to-reach communities affected by recent floods and designated as red zones.

Dr Fong adds suspected cases will be counseled on ongoing care and the severely ill will be transferred to the hospital to receive the appropriate treatment.

The Permanent Secretary for Health adds dengue fever cases also represent a serious concern.

He says they continue to urge everyone to get rid of potential mosquito breeding places.
