Great news for the 61 farmers in Northern Division as the Ministry of Sugar Industry has assisted farmers in Seaqaqa, Bucaisau and Wainikoro through the New Farmers and Lease Renewal Program, aimed at enhancing sugarcane productivity.

Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to offering comprehensive support to farmers, including technical guidance and other incentives aimed at promoting sustainable farming practices while handing over the grant agreement to farmers.

Sing says out of the 61 assisted farmers, 48 have benefited from grants under the New Farmers Program, while 13 have received support for lease renewals and this program is designed to alleviate financial burdens and encourage farmers to maximize their yields, ultimately boosting overall sugarcane production.

Singh says through the New Farmers and Lease Renewal Program, eligible farmers receive financial support equivalent to 30 percent of the cost of lease renewals or a maximum of $7,500, whichever is lower.

The Minister says farmers should utilise these incentives to leverage their farm operation effectively to enhance output and contribute to the industry's growth.

29-year-old Shamal Chand of Vunika Labasa acknowledged the government’s initiative to support the new farmers venturing into sugarcane farming.

He says this grant which he received will ease his burden to repay all his loans will help family to do some extra savings so that his savings will not be used to pay loan repayment.
