6,000 frontline workers will receive the first doses of the 12,000 AstraZeneca vaccines that has arrived into the country.

While receiving the vaccines Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says these Fijians serve on the frontlines of our COVID containment strategy.

He says they have also built an online registration portal under the digitalFIJI umbrella that will give them the data they need to ensure a smooth nation wide rollout.

Bainimarama says for now that portal is limited to 6,000 of our frontline workers and once that phase is complete they will announce the next phase.

The Prime Minister further says through COVAX, Fiji has received the first batch of the vaccines adding that we are only guaranteed enough vaccines for 20 percent of our population through COVAX and the timeline for when those vaccines arrive is uncertain.

Bainimarama says there will be no waiting out this pandemic.

The vaccination campaign is expected to start early next week.
