The Fiji Museum has announced the opening of the remaining exhibition spaces featuring ‘Our Creative Communities’. They say with completely renovated exhibition spaces that include videos, audio and beautiful contemporary visual art by some of Fiji’s leading creators, visitors can enjoy viewing and learning about the 575 unique treasures being showcased.

The new displays highlight the techniques and ‘making’ of iTaukei cultural treasures such as masi, woven fibre materials, carvings (including Fiji’s infamous war clubs) and pottery, as well as explore their use in ritual, faith and ceremony, examine their importance to and inclusion in governance, celebrate the introduction and inclusion of all communities for which Fiji is home and engage in the significance of the collective continuity as people of Fiji.

There is also a dedicated area where temporary exhibitions will feature – these will be curated by the Fiji Museum team, but also by artists, visiting projects and our own communities.

Fiji Museum says visitors will have the opportunity to experience multiple new displays every 4 months in a year that promises to be a dynamic and engaging space.

The National Museum closed its doors in 2020 due to the global pandemic during which there were 382 cultural treasures on display.

A new pricing strategy will also be introduced from tomorrow.

They will have half-price admission for locals on the 3rd Sunday of every month, free entry for all visitors on International Museum Day and discounted Fiji Museum Sitoa merchandise once per quarter, in conjunction with a new quarterly lecture series.

Adults aged 16 years and over will be charged $10.00 for local admission and $20.00 for overseas visitors. Children aged 2-15 years bwill pay $5.00 locally and $10.00 internationally.

Entry with a guided tour costs $15.00 for local adults and $30.00 for overseas adults, while local children will pay $7.50 and overseas children $15.00.

Concessions for visitors aged 55+, tertiary students with valid ID, and those with accessibility concerns will be charged $5.00 locally and $10.00 overseas.

Family groups (2 adults and up to 3 children) will be charged $20.00 for local admission and $40.00 for overseas.

Local school visits are priced at $2.50 per student and $6.00 per adult, with overseas schools encouraged to contact the museum for arrangements.

Tour operator groups are set at $25.00 per person, including a guided welcome or tour. According to the Fiji Museum, the improved pricing strategy will support informative guided tours, create innovative public programming and the maintenance of high display standards.
