Students under Tertiary Education Loans Scheme owe the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Service around $571 million.

This was revealed by the TSLS Chief Executive Officer, Dr Hasmukh Lal during the Memorandum of Understanding signing between TSLS and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service.

He says as of 31st of May this year, the total investment through TELS has been $603 million and they have recovered around $23 million.

Lal says $347 million is collectable, which means these are the students that have completed their studies, are in the workforce or running a small business or are not employed.

He adds from the $347 million figure they have, they are looking at around 29,762 students who should be repaying their TELS debt.

56,717 students have been assisted by TSLS and out of that number, 51,396 students have been assisted through TELS and 5,321 students have been assisted through scholarship, including those who have completed and those currently continuing their studies.
