With the weekend coming up, Police are calling on drivers to always be vigilant when driving on our roads after it was revealed that 42 out of the 56 fatal accidents that occurred this year, happened between Friday to Monday.

Police say the 42 fatal accidents signify a lack of concern and relaxed attitude towards road safety going into the weekends.

They say when it comes to road safety, drivers must never shift into relaxed mode because the consequences are just too great.

The Force adds that there is no room for complacency when it comes to road safety.

Police also highlighted that 422 drunk and driving arrests were made from 1st January to date, compared to 355 for the same period last year.

Police Chief of Operations ACP Livai Driu says the figures for drunk and driving arrests are alarming, and drivers need to understand that their lives are under threat when they choose to drink and drive.

He says efforts to curb drunk driving continues, but the responsibility lies with the driver.

He adds that arrests are being made and cars are seized as it is their responsibility to keep all road users safe.

The Chief of Operations says they will continue to do their work for everyone’s safety as operations will be heightened, and drivers can expect stop checks at various locations to ensure that drivers are not driving under the influence of liquor.

He says they will also monitor crimes.
