Four women were allegedly murdered by their partners this year while 334 women have become victims of domestic violence in the first five months of this year.

FWCC Coordinator, Shamima Ali says in most of these cases, women have fallen victim to their partners when they have wanted to leave these violent relationships.

Ali says when there are political or economic problems in the country, there seems to be a societal breakdown and because of the COVID-19 situation there are social problems where men show their frustration by beating up women.

She adds we live in a patriarchal society where men dominate and use their entitlement to keep women oppressed and one of the most severe manifestations of this is murder.

Ali says despite there being a life sentence for murder, there needs to be a change in mindset.

The FWCC Coordinator says the rehabilitation process of such prisoners needs to include a change in mindset because the actions of these men come from a desire to suppress and dominate women.

She adds there is a need for society to treat women with respect and equality.

If you are in a domestic violence situation that you need to get out of or need assistance, you can call FWCC’s toll-free number 1560.
